Lavrov Confirms Alaska Summit Progress Has Not Finished

(MENAFN) The ongoing dialogue between the United States and Russia, which began with the Alaska summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, is progressing, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

He shared in an interview published on Wednesday, that both nations still have the potential to “do much” based on the agreements made during the meeting between the two leaders.

Lavrov explained that President Putin arrived in Alaska with a response to a prior US initiative, which had been delivered by Trump’s special representative, Steve Witkoff, during a preceding visit to Moscow.

Putin’s message, as described by Lavrov, was that Russia “accepts the proposal… and suggests a specific path for its implementation,” although the foreign minister did not disclose any specifics about the content of the proposal.

Back in August, Kremlin adviser Yury Ushakov had referred to the American offer as “acceptable.” However, both Moscow and Washington have refrained from publicly sharing any further information about the proposal.

Lavrov noted that Moscow is still awaiting a formal response from the US regarding the roadmap that Russia outlined during the Alaska discussions.

He went on to commend Trump and his administration as being the only Western leadership that had made a genuine attempt to grasp the root causes of the Ukraine crisis.

Among these causes, Lavrov claimed, was the Western ambition to “lure” Ukraine into NATO, along with “discrimination” against the residents of Donbass by Kiev.

The two presidents addressed “a way forward” in relation to these matters during their summit, Lavrov added.

He also stated that recent American declarations about the potential provision of Tomahawk missiles to Kiev do not undermine the agreements established during the Alaska meeting.

Lavrov attributed such statements to the mounting pressure on Washington from Ukraine’s supporters in Western Europe.
